Artist Statement:
Michael Edmonds is a painter who draws on the rich
tradition of figurative art to create thoroughly modern work which explores the human form.
His work is insistently regressive, simple and direct,
and is especially indebted to Modigliani and Gauguin.
Edmonds’ obsession with overtly erotic female forms comes through in his trademark images of isolated, abstracted erogenous zones, all drenched in a swirl of delirious color. These pieces present a new, intensified
way of seeing those parts of the body already invested
with vigor and majesty. On the whole, his work is a playful, engaging attempt to reclaim the healthy
male gaze.
Dividing his time between New York and Rio, Edmonds’ new work is ablaze with fiery tropical flavor and bursting with an erotic potency that screams South America.
Edmonds was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His major art influences were Jonny Quest and Fat Albert, both of
whom awakened his passion for the line and basic
color schemes.
